BIRTHDAY PEOPLE
MESSAGE FROM MFCB PRESIDENT RACHEL BADER
Hello to all MFCB Members and Friends. As I write this message, our Annual FCB Convention held this year in Lake Buena Vista has
ended a week ago. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped us, as a host chapter, help to make the Convention a big
success and a pleasant experience for all who attended. Additional thanks go to Shelley Justice, who coordinated our exhibit hall table,
and Leslie Spoone, who arranged for some great volunteers to help out at the hotel.
As we look ahead to our Annual Luncheon in June, we'll have awards to present, which also will allow us as a chapter to, in a small way,
recognize the hard work and dedication to MFCB that so many of our Members have put into the organization. I'm proud to preside over
such an organization and look forward to what we as a chapter will accomplish in the future.
Speaking of the future, in the fairly near future, as in this Summer, the National Convention for American Council of the Blind (ACB) will
take place practically in our back yard in Jacksonville. I hope many of you get the opportunity to attend all or part of this Convention. There
are sure to be program items, exhibits, and local tours available to interest just about anybody. If you can't attend though, much of the
general session proceedings and some interaction with people in the exhibit hall will be streamed on ACB Radio.
One other thing you may do while on summer break is to consider giving some thought to some issues we, as a local Mid-Florida
Council of the Blind chapter, might like to focus on. These might be things like accessible pedestrian traffic signals, ongoing
transportation issues, public education, which would also include White Cane Safety Day events, etc. I look forward to September when
we'll get back together to discuss this further and gear up for our Annual Membership Drive as well.
Until then, have a great Summer.

NEXT MFCB GENERAL MEETING
The next Meeting of MFCB will be at the Annual June Awards Luncheon, held this year at Logan's Roadhouse, 7480 West Colonial Drive,
Orlando, FL 32818, on Saturday, June 10th, 2006, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The phone number at Logan's Roadhouse is (407)
295-5300. It is highly recommended that if anyone uses paratransit, please plan your rides accordingly.
Logan's is known for great mesquite-grilled steaks, ice-cold longnecks, mouthwatering, made-from-scratch yeast rolls, and bottomless
buckets of in-shell peanuts. The high-quality, moderately-priced menu features over 30 entrees, including aged steaks, hand-cut fresh on
premises, mesquite-grilled chicken, fresh-ground steak burgers, baby-back ribs, seafood, and specialty salads made from only the
freshest ingredients. As in previous MFCB Luncheons, Members and Guests will be responsible for their own checks; however, due to
the overall size of the group, gratuity will be included in the check totals for convenience.
The Annual June Awards Luncheon is the opportunity for MFCB to present its Chapter Awards, especially to a Member who has excelled
in service to the organization, and the Connie Rotter Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a visually-impaired student who is
committed to furthering their education. A fun time is always had by all who attend, so Members, if you have any last-minute questions
after the Membership/Telephone Committee contacts you concerning attendance to the Annual June Awards Luncheon, especially about
the great food at Logan's, contact 1st Vice President Patti Land at (407) 521-9047.

MFCB MAY GENERAL MEETING REVIEW
18 Members and guests attended the MFCB May General Meeting held on Saturday, May 6th, at William Booth Tower in downtown
Orlando. After those in attendance introduced themselves and the Pledge of Allegiance, 1st Vice President Patti Land, in the absence of
President Rachel Bader, allowed for the April Secretary's and Treasurer's Reports to be read, which were approved.
Patti then gave Committees the opportunity to make reports. Patti began for the Activities Committee by letting Members know that the
Annual June Awards Luncheon will be held on Saturday, June 10th, at Logan's Roadhouse in West Orlando. The location is near the
corner of West Colonial Drive and Hiawassee Road. Information will be printed in the June-July issue of THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE and
the Membership/Telephone Committee will be requested to call Members as a head count will need to be provided so the appropriate
reservation can be made with Logan's.
Patti then reported for the Awards Committee that the MFCB Chapter Award will be presented the Saturday morning of the 2006 FCB
Annual Convention in Lake Buena Vista. The Connie Rotter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded at the June Awards Luncheon, so if
anyone knows a visually-impaired student who is interested, contact Patti as soon as possible.
For the Transportation Committee, Nicole Hugues reported, in the absence of Chuck Graham, that meetings are scheduled for Metroplan
Orlando and Lynx to discuss and review Requests for Proposal (RFP) for paratransit services in Orange, Osceola and Seminole
counties. Nicole reminded Members they can contact her by phone or e-mail should they need more information. Recording Secretary
Shelley Justice commended those who have participated during this process.
2nd Vice President Bill Freeman reported on what has been happening as of late with the Orange County Community Traffic Safety Team
(CTST). The county's CTST has been looking carefully at the troubling red-light running situation, speeders at red lights and setting up a
mock DUI situation to better deal with those stopped due to drunk driving. As far as the accessible pedestrian signal issue is concerned,
Bill said that there still are funding concerns that prevent them from being implemented.
For the Membership/Telephone Committee, Membership Secretary Jay Bader reminded Members that the 2006 Membership Phone
Roster is available after the General Meeting in Print and Braille formats. He also said that FCB Raffle Tickets are still available for those
wanting to sell them, so they can see the table closest to the podium for those tickets as the remaining ones not sold will be taken to the
2006 FCB Annual Convention.
Before the Refreshments Committee report, Shelley wanted Members to be aware of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSD&B)
Alumni Convention in June. She is helping to arrange a yard sale for a "country store" during that convention. If anyone has anything to
donate, please contact Shelley as soon as possible. Jackie Gideons added that even portable electronics would be acceptable.
Jackie then reported for the Refreshments Committee that a count would be needed for the Annual June Awards Luncheon by June 8th
and reminded that the Membership/Telephone Committee will be contacting Members for a reservation count.
Before Old Business was discussed, Treasurer Dan Spoone thanked Jay for all his hard work on THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE. Jack Jordan
then wanted to ask Members in attendance about experiences with being selected for jury duty. Plenty of discussion ensued, with much
participation for many Members, and Jack said that as a result, he will consider submitting an article for the MFCB and FCB
Newsletters.
Old Business focused on the final plans for the upcoming FCB Annual Convention in Lake Buena Vista the weekend following the May
General Meeting. Patti announced that Paul Hutsko would not be able to attend the Convention due to health reasons and could not
serve as a delegate. The final list of delegates for the 2006 FCB Annual Convention:
Rachel Bader
Bill Freeman
Shelley Justice
Jay Bader
Nicole Hugues
Scott Larson
Sheila Young
Dan and Leslie Spoone would be the alternates, with Scott Larson the First Timer for this year's FCB Annual Convention.
Dan then announced that Leslie was still working on two groups to be volunteers for Convention and they should be ready to help but will
make sure Leslie works with Rachel on that. Shelley said she has 3 people for manning the MFCB Table at Convention.
While the mug to be sold at Convention was being shown to Members in attendance, talk turned to the final selling price for these mugs.
Jackie made a motion that they should be sold for $8.00. After a friendly amendment to change the price to $7.00, the motion was
approved.
The jar that was approved at the April General Meeting was then revisited. Shelley thought that more planning may be needed for this
fundraiser. Dan then made a motion to collect change at MFCB General Meetings, especially at the Annual June Awards Luncheon, for
planning this future fundraiser. After it was approved, Dan would collect change from those who did bring it.
Nicole announced that she would be involved with MV Transportation at Convention. She has maintained a list of those who have
expressed assistance, especially those who wanted transfers of their paratransit eligibility from throughout the state.
With no other Business to discuss, the following Door Prizes were awarded after the General Meeting adjourned:
Crystal Dinner Bell - Jackie Gideons
Power Picker Upper - Lisa Lawson
Mystery Prize - Jack Jordan
Stained Glass Mother's Sentiment - Nicole Hugues
Tumbler with Fish - Scott Larson
Bath Salts - Eddie Lee
Hard Chocolate Parfait Candy - Jay Bader
Dolphin Thermometer - Machel Cooper
Dreamcatcher - Bill Freeman
Congratulations to all the Door Prize Winners!

2006 F S D & B ALUMNI CONVENTION NEEDS YARD SALE DONATIONS
MFCB works in cooperation with many of its fellow blindness organizations. MFCB Member Shelley Justice is one of our Members who is
a major part of the Alumni of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (F S D & B). She actually submitted the following information
in time for the May 2006 issue of THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE but it was accidentally overlooked when that issue was prepared.
Even though there is not much time in preparation to participate, it is only proper to acknowledge the effort she is making with the 2006
F S D & B Alumni Convention, taking place at F S D & B in St. Augustine. After the Editor's Note, the following is Shelley in her
own words:
(Editor's Note: As was said at the MFCB May General Meeting, many apologies for the oversight.)
It is fast approaching one of my favorite times of the year. It will soon be time for the annual F S D & B (Florida School for the Deaf
and Blind) Alumni Summer Convention. Every year, usually in June, members of the F S D & B Alumni get together in St. Augustine
on the F S D & B campus for a weekend of fun and fellowship. We plan various activities, both on and off campus, and we also
have fundraisers throughout the weekend to benefit the students who attend the school.
This year, the Convention will be held June 1st-4th, and one of our fundraisers is to be a "country store." This is actually just another
name for a white elephant, rummage or yard sale. Do you have any items you are no longer using? Do you have things that you aren't
quite ready to throw away, but you are tired of pushing them from drawer to drawer or corner to corner? If so, please donate them to the
F S D & B Alumni Country Store.
In particular, we are looking for things such as small appliances which are still in working order, purses you've grown tired of,
collectables, jewelry you no longer wear, kitchen items, etc. Unfortunately, clothing doesn’t usually sell well. Almost anything still usable
can be used by someone. As the old saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Any donations you can bring would be
greatly appreciated by me, as well as the F S D & B Alumni Association.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (407) 656-8679 or send an e-mail to
seabelle@cfl.rr.com. Thanks so very much in advance for your help.

2006 ACB NATIONAL CONVENTION IN JACKSONVILLE
For those who attended the 2006 FCB Annual Convention in Lake Buena Vista, there is a lot to look forward to this summer. Every July,
our national organization, the American Council of the Blind (ACB) holds its National Convention, with this year's being in Jacksonville.
MFCB invites all its Members to attend as this will be a great opportunity to get to know the workings of ACB.
MFCB understands that many Members may not be able to travel to Jacksonville, but for those that can, please read the following,
reprinted with permission from the May 2006 issue of the ACB Newsletter,
The Braille Forum:
The 45th Annual ACB Convention will take place from Saturday, July 8th to Saturday, July 15th, in Jacksonville, FL. Convention
headquarters is the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville-Riverfront; hotel rates are $79 per night plus tax (single, double, triple, quad). Make
reservations by calling 1-800-233-1234 or (904) 588-1234.
Registration
Pre-registration forms should reach you between the middle and end of May, depending on where you live. Online pre-registration will
also be available again this year.
Pre-registration is important. It saves you money; it lets us know how many people will be attending meal functions, tours, and social
events. Here are some do's and don'ts:
DO pre-register as soon as possible. Many tours and other events are limited in size, and you don't want to be left out.
DON'T mark free events on the form unless you are fairly certain you will attend. Checking off free events just because they are free
creates a huge amount of work for our staff and slows down convention preparations.
DO read the ConventionScope, included in the pre-registration packet. Details of tours and many other activities are found there.
Reading that information can prevent many problems later.
DO check all appropriate boxes on the front of the form. We must know if you need an assistive listening device, if you require a
lift-equipped bus, your preferred program format, etc. Without this information, we may not be able to meet your needs when you arrive in
Jacksonville.
YAC Sign-up
Once again the Youth Activity Center (YAC) will be available from Monday through Friday. Kids 6 to 17 will enjoy crafts, swimming,
bowling, trips to an interactive science museum and Adventureland, and a Friday night pizza party. To simplify registration, each YACster
should complete a separate form. The YAC fee has been eliminated, and kids just pay the convention administrative fee instead. For
YAC questions, call Patti Cox at (502) 897-3864.
Paratransit
If you wish to use paratransit while in Jacksonville, you MUST establish eligibility. Call the JTA Connexion as soon as possible at (904)
265-6001. To schedule rides (up to 7 days in advance), call (904) 265-6999.
Exhibits and Sponsors
The convention exhibit area is the perfect place to market your company's products and services, or to say "thank you" to your customers.
Reserve your exhibit space by contacting Michael Smitherman at (601) 968-1013.
Corporate sponsorships and convention advertising are great ways to reach both philanthropic and marketing goals. Acknowledgments,
ads and features on ACB Radio, ongoing posting of convention programs on the ACB website, and on-demand convention
programming in the ACB Radio archive are just a few of the ways your message reaches the folks at home both during and after
convention week. For more information about sponsorship opportunities, call Brenda Dillon at (615) 874-1223.
Tours
To attend the pre-convention St. Augustine tour, plan to arrive in Jacksonville on Thursday, July 6th; the tour will leave the hotel at 7:15
Friday morning. And it will be close, but you should be back just in time to leave for the baseball game between the Jacksonville Suns
and the North Carolina Mud Slides.
Arrive in Jacksonville on Friday, July 7th, in order to make the Saturday casino cruise; the bus will leave at 9:30 AM.
Wind up a great convention week with another casino cruise on Saturday, July 15th. Complete your day of fun at the Alhambra Dinner
Theater; we'll enjoy delicious food and a production of "Beauty and the Beast."
Fridges
The hotel has a very limited number of refrigerators that can be placed in guest rooms. For availability and pricing, call the hotel directly at
(904) 588-1234.
Need more info or have a comment or suggestion? Contact Carla Ruschival at (502) 897-1472, or call the national office at
1-800-424-8666.

FCB E-MAIL DISCUSSION LIST AND VOICE CHAT ROOMS
Florida Council of the Blind (FCB) is proud to have its members throughout the state participate in a couple of ways on the Internet. The
FCB E-mail Discussion List is a way for members, locally and statewide, to express themselves freely on a variety of issues. These can
range from those on a local level to issues on a state or even national platform.
MFCB encourages all Members with E-mail and Internet access to sign up and participate in the various discussions as well as maybe
even starting a few. To sign up for the FCB E-mail Discussion List, and for more information about the List, go to the FCB website at
http://www.fcb.org and go to the link for "FCB E-mail Discussion List Information and Instructions."
And FCB has 2 voice chat rooms for members of the organization. One of these is for General chat, the other is for the FCB Board and its
respective committees to meet. Everyone is invited to sit in on these chats, especially to participate with those in the General chat
room.
For more information about these FCB chat rooms, especially if you want to know how you can join in on the chats, click on the link

THE 12 DAYS OF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
MFCB understands that when it comes to emergencies, those who are disabled, including the visually impaired, need added assistance
to take care of those situations. Hurricane season in Florida begins June 1st and lasts through November 30th, and the disabled
especially need to take precautions, whether it be preparing the home or being aware of local shelters to evacuate to.
With no similarities to the 12 Days of Christmas, here are the 12 Days of Hurricane Preparedness, the initiative sponsored by Florida's
American Red Cross chapters and found on the website
http://www.floridapreparesnow.org:
On the First Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a WATER CONTAINER. Having
an ample supply of clean water is a priority in an emergency.
On the Second Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a NOAA WEATHER RADIO. As
the voice of the National Weather Service, a Weather Radio provides continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information directly from
a National Weather Services Forecast Office. During severe weather, routine broadcasting is interrupted and special watch and warning
messages are issued.
On the Third Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a FIRE EXTINGUISHER. Install
A-B-C type Fire Extinguishers in the home and teach all household members how to use them.
On the Fourth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase PLASTIC SHEETING. Plastic
sheeting is a vital part of a Family Disaster Supplies Kit.
On the Fifth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a supply of CANNED FOOD.
Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
On the Sixth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a GENERATOR. A generator can
be a convenient source of power after a hurricane strikes. Generators should be properly installed and used safely.
On the Seventh Day of Hurricane Preparedness the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a FLASHLIGHT. As simple as
a Flashlight is, it can become a very important tool during and after disaster strikes. Every Family Disaster Supplies Kit should contain a
Flashlight and spare batteries.
On the Eighth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a complete FAMILY DISASTER
SUPPLIES KIT. A family will cope best by preparing for a disaster before it strikes. One way to prepare is by assembling a Family
Disaster Supplies Kit. Once disaster hits, you won't have time to shop and search for supplies.
On the Ninth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a SLEEPING BAG. If you have to
evacuate your home, a sleeping bag will provide you with extra comfort when you arrive at an American Red Cross shelter.
On the Tenth Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase a FIRST AID KIT. Because the
first five minutes of a medical emergency are critical every individual and family should have a First Aid Kit in their home and vehicle and
on their boat.
On the Eleventh Day of Hurricane Preparedness, the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase needed supplies to install
HURRICANE SHUTTERS on every window of the home. Installing hurricane shutters on all windows of a home will help to mitigate the
damage due to a storm's severe winds.
On the Twelfth Day of Hurricane Preparedness the American Red Cross recommends that you purchase DUCT TAPE. Duct tape is one
of the many items that should be in a Family Disaster Supplies Kit.
While many MFCB Members may not have all the resources available to follow all the 12-day recommendations of Hurricane
Preparedness, as long as one does their own preparation, whether with family, friends or those that assist them, we can all be rest
assured that any emergency, especially a hurricane, will be overcome sooner rather than later.

MFCB BREAKS FOR THE SUMMER
During the Summer, MFCB takes a break from Meeting during the Summer months of July and August. While Members may not get
together for a General Meeting, advocacy is an ongoing process. That was especially the case in 2004, when MFCB, NFB-Greater
Orlando chapter and other disability organizations, were able to work with the Orange County Library System (OCLS) is maintaining
operation of the Subregional Talking Book Library in downtown Orlando. It also applied in a slightly lesser manner when it came for the
tri-county area of Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties to comply with the Florida deadline for accessible voting.
There are other ongoing concerns MFCB continues to advocate for; two of which are that of accessible pedestrian signals and bus stop
signage, and better paratransit. While it is an uphill battle to work with the tri-county Community Traffic Safety Teams, MFCB is hopeful
that if one city in each county can begin to consider the advantages of safety for the disabled in walking the streets and not the cost to set
up the accessibility, including with regard to raised lettering on bus stop signs, everyone benefits. And with a new paratransit provider
possibly being announced by Lynx in June, transportation for the disabled can progress for the better, and MFCB will participate in any
way possible to insure that to be the case.
So while MFCB wants its Members to enjoy the Summer, it is important to remember that advocacy never stops.

MFCB WISHES ALL-WAYS TYPING THE BEST
On May 12th, 2006, the Editor of THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE received an e-mail from Linda Lynch of All-Ways Typing. For many years,
All-Ways Typing has done a remarkable job in taking care of the Large Print version of the MFCB Newsletter. But, according to Linda, the
time has come to enjoy the rest of her life to the fullest.
For those who do not know Linda well, she tells, in her own words, what she has done and plans to do, from her e-mail to the Editor:
While I've been threatening/promising to retire for about the last 5 years now, July 1st is looking more and more like the real-deal date.
All-Ways Typing passed its 25th Anniversary last September.
I don't recall if I mentioned my stroke in December, but it took out a good part of the strength and coordination from my left side. I believe
if I can focus more on ME, and my recovery, I can start working to regain some of my mobility, balance, etc.
It's been great; the MFCB is one of my oldest accounts. Jim Lamb & his sister Connie Rotter found me back in the mid-1980s and I
loved seeing Connie every month. She was precious. Then we met Chick & Mary Crampton, Zeena Hogsbro, Marion & Herb
Eiermann, the Valentinis...our girls even took piano from Lelah Edgell for a couple of years. I made letterhead, brochures, membership
cards, charter certificates. Chick helped me get the White Cane Bulletin which I did for several years, and
worked with Bobbie & Bill Probst, Doug Hall, Jim Warth. I've attended several meetings/luncheons over the years and enjoyed
getting to know so many special people.
I DO tend to take my time traipsing down memory lane, don't I?
ANYWAY, I will do the [June] Newsletter and help the new person if need be, but I doubt I have anything useful to anyone (unless they'd
like to buy the 11x17 yellow paper stock I have here).
So wish me luck! See you in the funny papers.

MEMBERSHIP - from Jay Bader
Notes from Jay: With the Summer comes a time to re-energize for a busy Fall, especially when it comes to Membership commitments.
However, the Summer is when our Annual MFCB Membership Drive begins. It will begin after the ACB National Convention ends in
Jacksonville and will continue into the Fall.
Just so Members can prepare, the Annual MFCB Membership Drive is done in cooperation with the Bureau of Braille and Talking Book
Library Services in Daytona Beach. Those mailers will be sent with the hope that there are those who receive it interested in becoming
Members of MFCB.
There will be those who get this mailing that are already members but please keep in mind that if you are a Talking Book subscriber in
Orange, Osceola or Seminole County, this will arrive. So if you know someone who you think may be interested in becoming a Member
of MFCB, or if they would like to donate to our organization, pass it along. Just as they do on the state level, donations are always gladly
accepted.
More specific information on membership renewals will be in the August-September issue of THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE.
Also, based on feedback given at the March General Meeting, I am considering a return to the MFCB Newsletter of spotlighting an MFCB
Member in each issue. Based on what may be involved in doing so, it could take time to have it included in the appropriate manner, but if
you have any suggestions about this, please contact me. It may be another way Members can connect to each other besides attending
the General Meeting or participating in an activity.
And I always accept submissions to THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE. All submissions for the August-September 2006 issue must arrive by
regular mail or e-mail to me by the 15th of July as it will be prepared shortly after that. You will be properly credited with the
submission.
If you have any further questions, please call me at (407) 658-2479 or e-mail at
mfcbinfo@bellsouth.net. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Annual June
Awards Luncheon as well as possibly the 2006 ACB National Convention in Jacksonville this July!
